Porters

The Crew

Our team, in addition to the three of us, consisted of our expert guide Wilbert, assistant guide Faraja, 30 porters and of course our three mates from Australia whom we met the day before the climb.

It was obvious from the moment we arrived at our first camp that we had by far the best crew on the mountain. Thanks to F & S and their commitment to excellent porter care our team was outfitted with the best equipment.

On November 15 2002, National Geographic Adventure ran a story ('Deaths on Kilimanjaro Raise Concern About Porters' Safety') on the deaths of three porters on Kilimanjaro. In October 2003, they ran another article ('Carrying a heavy load') claiming "between 15 and 20 porters die on Kilimanjaro each year". If you are considering a trip to Kilimanjaro please read this information.

Good equipment and expert organization assured that our team was always in high spirits. The whole team had fun, we even played soccer at 14,500 ft. on the rocky fields of Sheffield camp!
